Coq au vin

Meet "Goldie" a.k.a. Coq au vin. It's a bit hard to tell from this blurry mobile phone photo, but he's a handsome young Barnevelder cockerel. Goldie joins our three beautiful hens Chicken Schnitzel, Chicken Teriyaki and Chicken Tikka Masala to hopefully protect and augment our little flock. Until now, the girls have had to make do with fancy pin-up calendar boy "Mr July" in their hen house (see below).

I collected Goldie today from a family in Castle Forbes Bay, not far south from here. Of five recently hatched chicks, three were male, so they had to give some away. The children were determined that Goldie should not be eaten, so the family is happy that he's gone to a home where he can live on with his own little flock. He was advertised on Freecycle, a network for giving away stuff you don't want to people who do. It will be interesting to see what the girls think of him... he's only five months old and has some growing to do, so I hope he doesn't get pecked too much.

  1. so glad to see Goldie will hopefully be loved and adored by the girls. I think he will be much more stunning than the pin up boy! Nice to know we are neighbours, we are quite new to the area, we moved to tassie in 2010 also, and is hard to make new friends. We must get together sometime and talk about the feathered flock and furry family. We have 2 german shephers. Will try to find a email address of yours to contact you personally. Love the blog, my hubby has been reading it for ages!:)- Goldie's previous motherhen, Leanne

  3. Hi Susan, so nice to meet you the other day when you came to pick up Goldie. I am sure he will be happy with his girls and sure his good looks will surpass the pin up boy!! ha ha. We must get together one day for a chat. We have two german shepherds. Maybe we could meet down at the dog beach at Kingston one day. We moved to Tassie in 2010, and my husband has been reading your blog for ages. Will try to find your email to send you a personal message. Cheers Leanne

  4. Hi Leanne, it would be great to stay in touch! Goldie is getting on well so far, although he got a bit soaked on Monday standing out in the pouring rain in the chook yard on his own. I think the bossy hens wouldn't let him back in the shed! They seem to be getting on better now. I think he's going to turn out to be a stunner too. I'll make sure to post more photos when I get some good ones.
