Ancient pines

Quite a few years back when Wollemi pines were first sold commercially, I bought one for my Dad for Christmas. He loves Australian native plants and history so it seemed a good combination of the two. Here's what it looked like when I visited earlier this month. Beautiful, isn't it?

On Sunday we spotted Huon pines (Lagarostrobus franklinii) for sale at the Franklin Market. We've had several visitors ask us where they can see one, so now they can see one (albeit a tiny one) in the corner of our yard. Hope it thrives like my Dad's tree has.

  1. your dads tree looks great. I have a huon pine in my garden, several years old. When i bought the house the previous owners said Huon Pines like a lot of water.

  2. Hi Susan - I hope the seller of your Huon Pine warned you about the hugely long development life of a HP! My dad (being a sculptor in Huon Pine at the time) planted one in the garden of our house in Franklin Road. It stayed the same tiny pot-plant size for the 15+ years he lived there, but was unfortunately destroyed along with the rest of the property when the house burned down.

  3. Hi Rita, yes I knew about the slow growth of the Huon pine - one reason it's a shame there aren't more mature ones left. Shame about your dad's house and garden too... It's taken more than 10 years for my Dad's Wollemi pine to reach about 1 metre tall. A garden man warned him that it would grow to be 'huge' but I don't think either of us will be around to see that!

  4. Hi Susan, it's great you have planted a huon pine, I plan to plant a couple as soon as possible and can't wait to establish our new garden here in franklin. It's a beautiful
spot and we are just loving every minute. I have enjoyed reading your blog!

  5. Nice to 'meet' you Cate! Almost three years in and we've made a good start on the garden, but there will always be so much to do. Good luck with yours!
